Gym and Dance Display

Gym and Dance Display

The annual Gym and Dance Display, where girls from across the year groups showcase their gravity-defying and dizziness-inducing displays of sporting prowess, was held on Tuesday evening.

The event opened with a lively warm-up routine performed by all the Gymnastic Club members. They impressed the audience as they somersaulted and flipped their way around the floor, leaping with force and landing with control and precision. Then followed different floor routines by girls from each year group, all choreographed by their peers from Years 10, 11 and the Sixth Form. Of particular note were the Gymnastic Squad floor solos, performed by a team who finished 4th in the Regional Schools’ Floor and Vault Championships 2019. The trampette routine to ‘Reach’ was exceedingly energetic and the rhythmic routines had the audience mesmerised.

After the interval, the dancers took to the stage with everything from Modern and Tap to Ballroom and Bollywood. The routines varied from being frenetic and twirl-filled, to fluid and gentle, and all that lies in between. The Year 9 pupils played a part in choreographing several routines for the Year 7s and it was excellent to see the beautiful results of their hard work.

The use of music and lighting to enhance the display was fantastic and the girls are to be commended for thinking not only of their movement, but how costume, light and sound could be used to elevate their performances. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening which demonstrated perfectly how creativity, patience and practice pay off.
