“Come to the table… there’s plenty for all”…
These words from one of the chorus songs certainly rang true for us in this year’s enchanting Lower School (Years 8 and 9) production of 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. With a cast, choir and crew of some 30 girls, this well-known story by C S Lewis, adapted by RSC’s Adrian Mitchell, could not fail to have connected audiences with its deep significance and power.
Performed in the main Hall, the action filled the space in a creative way with Narnia and the ‘World of Men’ cleverly spanning both stage and floor, keeping the energy alive for all concerned. The stage crew enjoyed the skills required in fast set changes (Miss Polly White) which supported the actors throughout their performance. Atmosphere and mood were created simply yet effectively by superb lighting effects and projections (Mr Tim Perkins), all seamlessly managed by Producer, Mrs Laura Evans-Jones. The sound effects (Mr John Taylor) of Aslan’s great roar and the exquisite hand-painted masks (Mrs Rosie Byrne and Ms Bev Routledge) startled yet excited the younger members of the audiences. Make-up (Miss Dee Andrews) created an imposing and powerful White Witch and, again, it was wonderful to see the younger members of the audience so enraptured by her stature and magic. The many animals too were charmingly and innocently played along with some sparkling duets from many of the lead actors.
Last word though must go to the Directors, Mr Erik Anders (Drama) and Mr Joe Adams (Music), who helped to draw out the talents of the girls over the course of this year. Acting, singing and general musical skills demonstrated not only talent but real potential and it was wonderful to see the girls expressing this so fully and confidently. Well done, and we look forward to seeing what next year will bring!
