Last Friday, our 'Insight Into... ' series welcomed back Vicky Cunningham (2018), who is now an Assistant Clinical Psychologist. Vicky answered many questions about her career from ten eager girls in Years 7 - 11. The setting allowed for rich discussion, bridging the gap between classroom theory and the nuanced reality of a career in mental health.
Vicky indicated that while there are many pathways to explore upon becoming a psychologist, each pathway requires commitment and is very rewarding. She explained that although the pupils were interested in several different areas of specialisation (such as Forensic Psychology), the day-to-day responsibilities and the level of training needed for each of these positions differ greatly.
Vicky, who balances her career with volunteering for the Girl Guides, spoke about the importance of service. She challenged the common misconception that volunteering is simply a 'ticking off' exercise for your CV when, in fact, it frequently provides opportunities to demonstrate and develop leadership, organisation and problem-solving capabilities that may not normally be available in paid, entry-level positions.
We are thankful to Vicky for her time and for being an inspiration to the next generation of psychological thinkers.
