On Thursday 8 May, our school community celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day. As we were spoilt with some tasty sweet treats in the Refectory, the red, white and blue decorations reminded us of what would have been on display in the same room on 8 May 1945.

It's particularly important to look back at our school's own history during that momentous time. Thanks to our school archives, we can clearly picture that historic day through the eyes of Rani Blood, our Head Girl of 1944 - 1945. Her first-hand account captures the atmosphere as news of the German surrender reached our school. Just as our Refectory was decorated yesterday, Rani described how, in 1945, the space was quickly transformed with decorations.

As we enjoyed our own small commemoration in the Ref yesterday, surrounded by the echoes of past celebrations – both in the food we shared and, we imagine, in the similarly patriotic, if perhaps more spontaneously created, decorations – it served as a reminder for our school community of the importance of remembrance and gratitude.
